Proposal
This seminar explores the linking functions of love, hate and curiosity. As humans, we are interdependent with others all of our lives. This interdependency keeps us physically vital, emotionally thriving and intellectually active. When early trauma occurs, dependency becomes dangerous and interdependency is avoided. Development then becomes spotty, with excellence in some aeras and deficits in others. Many of our traumatized patients, who are successful professionally, have failed personal relationships. They seem unable to access the linking emotions of love, hate and curiosity. Instead, they often mimic relationship and use words about words instead of words expressing emotion. Without access to their emotional lives, their ability to think and dream is also compromised.
Objectives: Participants will learn:
1.- to differentiate affect from emotion and feeling.
2.- to recognize words about words.
3.- to notice emotional messages from the body.

IX.- APPROACHING THE UNCONSCIOUS THROUGH THE PSYCHE SOMA
Date – June 23,2024
Speaker: Lesley Caldwell ( UK)
Time: 9:30 am – 12:15 pm México City Time
Abstract – Donald Winnicott was committed to the unconscious as an essential aspect of psychoanalytic theory and practice though he neither elaborated his use nor provided definitions for the term. He argues for the development of the unconscious as one strand of the development of the self, one aspect of what it means to be human. He links this to the psyche soma and the primacy of the body in attaining individuation and separateness. paying particular attention to how bodily processes of taking in and expelling come to assume a lasting symbolic value in shaping the nascent psyche. In discussing neurotic patients Winnicott follows Freud, but for patients where an early integration either never happened or was interrupted, he proposes that the existence of the unconscious itself may be in doubt. Such a claim has implications for how some analyses should proceed. In this presentation I highlight two potentially related areas, the creativity of the unconscious and the incommunicado self as a core of the human being that exists before the organisation of consciousness and unconsciousness .
Objectives –
- to explore Winnicott’s emphasis on the body as part of the development of the self.
- to describe the areas of Winnicott’s approach to the unconscious that are distinctive
- to discuss the implications of his proposals for analytic technique.
