PRIMORDIAL SYMPHONY OF LIFE: TRUTH AND THE BODY

Speaker: JUDY K. EEKHOFF (USA)

Judy K. Eekhoff, PhD FIPA is an IPA certified training and supervising psychoanalyst and a licensed child psychologist who has a private practice in Seattle, Washington, USA. She is a full faculty member of Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, of Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and of COR Northwest Family Development Center. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and of two books: Trauma & Primitive Mental States, An Object Relations Perspective and Bion and Primitive Mental States: Trauma and the Symbiotic Link.

PROPOSAL

Emotions are the symphony of life. They are the invisible and mysterious link between soma and psyche as well as between self and other. Emotions create harmony amongst the sights, sounds, and sensations of experience. They link us with each other. They unite imagination with reality. Beauty and truth are inseparable in the symphony.

Remembering that communication is largely unconscious and always arises from our emotional primordial selves supports Ferenczi’s and Bion’s understanding and ours: we need at least two people in intimate communication to discover truth. The joint experience cannot be teased apart into you are speaking truth and trust that I am not lying. Rather truth or lie emerges in the emotional relationship between two or more people. Further, emotions are the link between the body and the mind, serving as they do to promote symbolization. They are also the link intersubjectively between two subjects and between subject and object. The symphony of life is in the beauty of the world and the emotional atmosphere engendered in relationship. The emotional capacity for passion: to truly love, hate or know another person is to register their individuality with our hearts and bodies.

1.Participants will be able to discuss the primordial as an essential element of psychoanalysis.

2.Participants will be able to differentiate intimate emotional links from stimulating intellectual connection.

3.Participants will be able to register their own unique symphonies of love, hate and curiosity.

DATE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2024.

TIME: 9:30 AM MEXICO CITY TIME

* Recording available.

Donald Winnicott (1896-1971) is known as the leading theorist of the Independent Group in British Psychoanalysis. He was distinctive among psychoanalysts in making substantial contributions to psychoanalytic theory and practice, while widely disseminating the basics of a psychoanalytic approach through consistent interventions in public life: teaching, writing, BBC broadcasts, letters, short articles in newspapers and talks given to a variety of professional associations and government bodies. His influence was particularly significant in social work, residential care for children, child psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

This Seminar is about the relevance of DWW work with children and adolescents, our objective is to encourage curiosity and play, through lectures and by the hand of an expert in the field, in all professional engagements with children and young people.

PLAYING AND REALITY A REVIEW

Speaker:  LESLEY CALDWELL (UK)

Lesley Caldwell, MA, PhD, is Visiting Professor in the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London, a member (retired) of the British Psychoanalytic Association (BPA), clinical associate of the British Psychoanalytic Society (BPAS), and currently (2023–2025) European representative on the Executive Committee of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) Board of Representatives. With Helen Taylor Robinson, she is joint general editor of The Collected Works of Donald Winnicott (OUP, 2016). Clinically, she is interested in the silent patient and issues of aliveness and deadness in the consulting room, and she has a long-standing interest in psychoanalysis and the visual arts. Recent publications: “Mit Winnicott über Veränderung im Behandlungsraum nachdenken” [Thinking with Winnicott about change in the consulting room], in Entwicklung und Veränderung (Psychosozial-Verlag, 2023); “Affect et émotion dans le cabinet de consultation,” in En séance, au fil de l’affect et de l’émotion (Éditions d’Ithaque, 2023); and “Milner and the Origins of Creativity,” in The Marion Milner Tradition (Routledge, 2022). Correspondence: Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES

In Playing and Reality Winnicott is concerned with the springs of imaginative living and of cultural experience in every sense, with whatever determines an individual’s capacity to live creatively and to find life worth living. The ideas expressed here extend the theme first put forward in his paper ‘Transitional Objects and Transitional Phenomena’ published in 1953. They relate to an area of experience that has for centuries been a recurrent preoccupation of philosophers and poets. This intermediate area, between internal and external reality, is intensely personal, since its existence depends, as does the use that can be made of it, on each individual’s early life experiences.

What are the origins of creativity and how can we develop it – whether within ourselves or in others? Not only does Playing and Reality address these questions, it also tackles many more that surround the fundamental issue of the individual self and its relationship with the outside world. In this landmark book of twentieth-century psychology, Winnicott shows the reader how, through the attentive nurturing of creativity from the earliest years, every individual has the opportunity to enjoy a rich and rewarding cultural life.

In four sessions, we will review Winnicott´s classic text book “Playing and Reality”
