BION WORLDWIDE ONLINE SEMINARS

2026 – 2027

Bion’s work has changed the landscape of contemporary psychoanalysis. At the age of seventy, Bion emigrated to California, beginning his international travels; he traveled to destinations in Latin America, North America, and Europe to give Lectures, Seminars, and Supervisions. The various events were recorded and later transcribed. He also wrote two volumes of autobiography and a biographical novel, A Memoir of the Future.

Following Bion’s evolving thinking, these Online Seminars offer an integrated view of the dialectic interplay between Bion’s earlier writings and his later ones, reflecting the perpetual movement that Bion tries to depict between different modes of apprehending reality. The Seminars are structured in a way that will inform and interest the participants. For readers who know Bion’s work well, we invite you to revisit his work accompanied by outstanding speakers from different geographical regions.

BION´S TRILOGY –

These names “Trilog”, refer to Wilfred’s Bion Trilogy because the books published between the 1960s and 1970s represent the development of his core ideas in Learning From Experience (1962), Elements of Psychoanalysis (1963), and Attention and Interpretation (1970). These three books are key components of Bion’s “later” work. They are considered foundational texts in the development of his unique approach to psychoanalysis, which he based on his clinical experience with patients, particularly those in psychotic states.

Helscher received a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Virginia and a Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis from the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies, where he is a Training and Supervising Analyst, Past President, and on the faculty He is in private practice in Santa Monica, CA, and a member of the University of California Interdisciplinary Psychoanalytic Consortium, and on the board of the Soldiers Project.

NOVEMBER  15, 2026 –

LOVE, HATE AND KNOWLEDGE –

In Wilfred Bion’s work, Love, Hate, and Knowledge (LHK) represent three fundamental and intertwined emotional links that drive human experience and connection and are notated, respectively, as “L,” “H,” and “K.” These emotions are psychic stimuli — the constitutional or instinctual givens — which the individual brings to their experience. Many of our traumatized patients, who are successful professionally, have failed personal relationships. They seem unable to access the linking emotions of love, hate, and curiosity. The author discusses how both the patient and the analyst struggle with these emotions as they emerge in the psychoanalytic experience.

BION IN THE CONSULTING ROOM –

The Seminar addresses the long-unanswered question of Bion’s clinical and supervisory techniques and examines how Bion’s conceptual model and clinical practices informed his theoretical work.

The Seminar will discuss the four distinctive periods of Bion’s clinical and supervisorial work in chronological order: the group period of the 1940s; the period of the psychosis papers in the 1950s; the epistemological period of the early 1960s; and, finally, the period of his international group seminars in the late 1960s and 1970s.

THE OTHER SIDE OF GENIUS –
