BION´S LEGACY
WORK WITH CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUNG ADULTS
CLINICAL SEMINARS
PROPOSAL
Tim Smith, a child psychotherapist at the ACP (London), and I (a child and adolescent training analyst and supervisor from Mexico City) have been discussing the importance of expanding W. Bion’s clinical legacy into the field of child and adolescent psychoanalysis. As Parthenope Bion Talamo (2012) mentioned, although Bion didn’t write extensively about his analytical experiences with children, the influence of his theories on infantile psychoanalysis is notable.
The Clinical Online Seminars aim to expand Bion’s legacy through clinical online presentations with children, adolescents, and young adults, in 2026 – 2027
We open this activity with two outstanding colleagues: Tim Smith (UK) and João Carlos Braga (Brazil), and will continue announcing seminars in pairs throughout 2026 and 2027.

TIM SMITH (UK)

Dr Tim Smith is a member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists in the UK. He trained at the Tavistock Centre, where he is now a visiting lecturer. Clinically, he works with child and adolescent patients in the National Health Service and in private practice in East London. His interest in Bion’s autobiographies stems from the time he spent listening to how children and adolescents find ways to tell the stories of what’s happened to them and those around them. He has published two papers on his research on The Long Weekend: ‘Half alive, half dead boys: sexuality and censorship in Wilfred Bion’s ‘The Long Weekend’.’ Journal of Child Psychotherapy. And, The tiger skin on the banister (and other stories): internal dialogues and parallel autobiographical process in a reading of Wilfred Bion’s ‘The Long Weekend, 1897-1919: Part of a Life’. Life Writing: A film essay, ‘A fall from the stars: a critical psychoanalytic reading of James Gray’s ‘Ad Astra (to the stars)’ is forthcoming in the Journal of Child Psychotherapy.
